What to work out first · Lead Time
The Date Is the Constraint
Award programs have an immovable date. Everything else is negotiable and that is not, so it should be the first thing anybody mentions.
Send the occasion, the quantity, the date and the budget per piece. You get a straight answer, including whether silver is the wrong choice here.

The approval phase is what runs long
Clients plan around the making time and are surprised by the approval time. Design sign-off, name lists, engraving proofs and spelling checks all require somebody senior to respond, and those people are busy. On most late award programs, the delay was internal rather than at the workshop.
Name lists are the specific risk. They arrive late, they change after proofing, and each change resets that piece completely — which is manageable for one and a genuine problem for a program where twenty are in production simultaneously.
What extends a lead time
- Custom design, which adds a design and approval phase.
- Name lists arriving late or changing after proofing.
- Engraving proofs waiting for sign-off.
- Higher quantities, which take proportionally longer to finish.
- Shipping to many addresses rather than one.
Working backwards from the event
Shipping, finishing, engraving, proof approval, production, and design if the piece is custom. Each has a duration, and the sum of them against your event date gives the point at which the list has to be frozen.
That freeze date is the number worth having. It is more useful than a total lead time because it is the deadline that actually sits with you rather than with us.
How we handle it
- 01Ask for the event date before anything else.
- 02Work backwards to a realistic order-by date and tell you plainly.
- 03Set a name-list deadline and hold it.
- 04Proof engraving properly and get written sign-off.
- 05Ship to arrive before the event, not on the day.
Freeze the name list. The single most common cause of a late award program is a list that keeps changing after engraving has started, and every change resets that piece completely.

Where we stop
If the date is too close for what you are asking for, we will say so rather than accepting and hoping. A late award is worse than a simpler one delivered on time.
